How
long is a piece of rope? Depends.
Our
rates are reasonable, but vary from job to job. We have charged
$100 to $100,000 for custom presentations for clients, and have produced
a feature film budgeted at $1million plus. There are three
approaches we can take to agree on a price: 1)
Flat rate for the job. Using past projects to judge what will be
involved and breaking the work down into all its elements, we can quote
a budget and stay within it unless the parameters change or a hurricane
comes through while we're shooting with a crew of twenty. Barring
major changes in the scope of the work or acts of God, we pride
ourselves on being able to come in on budget with a top notch product. 2)
Per hour. This is a very comfortable way for us to work (for both
parties) when it is difficult to determine the scope of the work at the
beginning of a project. EG, before a script is written, we may not
know whether we'll be shooting avalanches in Greenland or a lecture at
the local community college. Our basic rate for several years has
been $150/hr., which includes one person and use of any equipment we own
- cameras, editing equip, etc. plus expenses - equipment we may need to
rent, travel, additional crew, etc. 3)
You tell us. This is frequently a very effective way to
work. The client puts a cap on production costs and we maximize
the quality within that budget - we cut corners where it won't show, use
the best format that is appropriate for the project and fits within the
budget, etc. In
actuality, the process usually involves elements of all three. For
example, we can bill per hour for writing a script, then based on that,
quote a budget for producing the presentation. What we don't do is
add in hidden costs at the end of a project or let an open-ended budget
escalate without keeping the client informed. We
use a standard contract that describes the scope of the work to be
performed, the timetable, and budget. Depending on the project, we
may ask for an initial deposit and interim payments with the balance due
on completion.
